After understanding the total cost of ownership is a logical next question: what our efforts actually deliver? What is the return on investment? Because libraries (barely) charge for their products is to measure the yield is not easy, but it can be. Some years ago the British Library published the research report 'Measuring our value. For every pound of taxpayers' money that was spent on the BL, the society would get back £ 4.40 in benefits. How did they know?!
